It was first mentioned in documents in 1272 and joined the Swabian Cities Alliance in 1377; the battle of Stoss Pass, one of the most important in the Appenzell Wars (1401-29), took place nearby. Gais received the 1977 Wakker Prize for the preservation and development of its architectural heritage and the 1782 Protestant church, with its Rococo interior, the 1781 Krone Inn and the 1796 former spa hotel Neuer Ochsen are all listed heritage sites.
