The Fraumünster Church and Convent was founded in 853 by King Louis the German (806-876), a grandson of Charlemagne. The convent enjoyed royal patronage and minted its own coins. Following the Reformation, ownership passed to the city. The church has three aisles, a high vaulted transept and an enormous organ with 5,793 pipes. Amongst its treasures are the stained glass windows, dating from 1945, by the Swiss artist Augusto Giacometti (1877-1947) and the five glass windows from 1970 by Marc Chagal (1887-1885). He was also responsible for the rosette in the South transept. The frescos in the cloister are by Paul Bodmer.
