Situated near the Zoo (see separate entry), the Fluntern cemetery has many impressive sculptures and is the resting place of a number of famous people. The grave of James Joyce (1882-1941) the great Irish writer is here, with a nearby statue of him, book in hand; his wife is also buried here. The grave of Elias Canetti (1905-1994) is to the left of Joyce’s, he was the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1981. The author of ‘Heidi’, Johanna Spyri (1827-1901), rests in the Central Cemetery and the German actress Therese Giehse (1898-1975) also has her grave here.
