The Solothurn Kunstmuseum has an impressive permanent collection in addition to its programme of special exhibitions. The focus is on Swiss art from 1850 to the present, but old masters include Hans Holbein the Younger’s ‘Solothurn Madonna’ (1522) and the anonymous ‘Virgin with Strawberries’, a 1425 painting on wood from the Rhenish school. The Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) works include his celebrated William Tell painting, and the 1901/2 ‘Goldfish’ by Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) is another feature. Amongst the other artists with exhibited works are Cuno Amiet, Frank Buchser, Edgar Degas, Alberto Giacometti, Bernhard Luginbühl, Henri Matisse Meret Oppenheim and Jean Tinguely.
