The Kloster Fahr Priory, about 12 km northwest of Zürich, is located on the banks of the Limmat River banks near Unterengstringen and, with Einsiedeln Abbey, is the only preserved double monastery in the world. The priory, the home of Benedictine nuns, was founded in 1130 and its name originates from the German for the ferry (Fähre), which once crossed the River Limmat at this point. Life in the monastery was halted during the Reformation, but the church was re-consecrated in 1549 and the religious community re-established in 1576. The priory became the property of the Aargau canton in 1803.
