Founded in 1979, the Eschenberg Observatory is owned and operated by the Astronomical Society of Winterthur. The small building has a sliding roof, two telescopes of the latest design and offers a multi-media experience. Visitors can see the craters on the moons surface, the multitude of stars in the Milky Way, the rings of Saturn and the crescent of Venus, known as the Evening Star. When weather conditions are not ideal, computer simulations and vivid slides reproduce the heavens. In 2002, a main-belt asteroid discovered by the observatory was named after the city and designated 43669 Winterthur (2002 GA10).
