The village of Erlenbach im Simmertal is located approximately 16 km southwest of Thun and its roughly 1,000-year-old church, together with the parsonage building and the wooden stairs, is classified as a national monument. The beautiful church, dedicated to St Michael, was built in the 11th century and extended in the 13th and 15th centuries. The famous 15th century wall paintings depicting biblical scenes are known as the ‘Wandmalereien’. Other features include the octagonal spire with its 1693 forged cross, the stained glass windows donated in 1935 and 1939 and the 1812 organ, renovated in 1966/67.
