The art collection of Emil Georg Bührle (1890-1956), one of the most important private collections in Europe, is housed in an 1886 villa next to Bührle’s former home. Its core is French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, with paintings by Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, van Gogh and others. There are also 19th century French works leading up to Impressionism and works of the French avant-garde from 1900. The museum was the scene of notorious art theft on 10th February 2008 when a Monet, van Gogh, Cézanne and Degas were stolen; the first two were recovered 8 days later.
