The Design Museum was developed out of the Museum of Arts and Crafts founded in 1875. The present 1933 building, a National Monument, was designed by Adolf Steger (1888-1939) and Karl Egender (1897-1969) and, although initially controversial, is regarded as one of Switzerland’s best examples of modern architecture. The museum concentrates on posters, design and graphics and also runs the Bellerive Museum (see separate entry). The poster collection contains more than 330,000 items and is one of the world’s most comprehensive and important archives. The graphics collection documents the aesthetic and cultural transformation of graphics in everyday life, from Gutenberg to the present.
