The monumental iron modern sculpture which, as its name suggests is painted red, is by the local Swiss sculptor Silvio Mattioli, who was born in Winterthur in 1929. It was created in 1986 especially for an exhibition at the Helmhaus (adjacent to the Wasserkirche). Described by the artist as an ‘amusing way of getting things started’, it was acquired by a patron who subsequently donated it to the city. Mattioli was also responsible for the imposing seven meter high chromium nickel steel sculpture at the Paradeplatz (see separate entry).
