Located at Stein, approximately 8.5 km southwest of St Gallen and open all the year round, the Schaukäserei is a showcase dairy for Appenzeller cheese. Cheese is made daily from about 8:30 am until around 5:00 pm and the guided tour lasts about one hour. Apart from seeing the cheese making process, you can also view 13,500 maturing cheeses. A DVD film is shown and there are information boards. For tasting, there is a restaurant and a shop. Next door, the Appenzeller Volkskundemuseum has live demonstrations on the loom and embroidery machine and there is cheese making, ‘old style’, in the cowshed.
