The site of St Michael’s Colegiate Church at Beromünster, northeast of Sursee, has been a place of worship since 720 AD. The 11th Century Romanesque basilica with three aisles was remodelled in Baroque style in the 18th Century and the church, cloister, St Gallus chapel and the more than 30 canon houses around have been developed into an attractive complex sometimes referred to as the ‘Second Rome’. The Treasury is one of the most important in Switzerland and its collection includes the 7th Century Reliquary of Warnebertus, ivory panels dating from the 8th to 14th centuries, Baroque chalices and medieval reliquary vestments.
