The 12th century Clock Tower is both a land mark and Solothurn’s oldest structure; the actual clock tower storey was added in 1427. The astronomical clock dates from 1545 and the mechanical figures are of the grim reaper, a knight and between them is ‘Mannli’ the traditional prince of fools. The grim reaper turns his sandglass over on the hour. You will also find depictions of two martyrs and city saints, Urs and Victor, who were Roman legionnaires beheaded as a result of their Christian faith. The clocks and their mechanisms were built by Lorenz Liechti and Joachim Habrecht.
