Located underground, the Civil Protection Museum has a large and well preserved collection of original objects. These include blackout lamps, gas masks, field kitchens, food ration coupons, rescue tools and surgical instruments. In spite of its traditional neutral status, protection of the civil population became an important issue for Switzerland as a result of the increase in armaments in the world. The construction of secure shelters in residential buildings became obligatory in 1963 and the country’s Air Defence became a civil protection organisation in 1950.
