One of the most unusual sights in St Gallen is the City Lounge in the centre of the city. It was designed and built by the artists Pipilotti Rist and Carlos Martinez, as winners of a competition organized by the Swiss Association of the Raiffeisenbanken (SVRB). The project creates a public living room, arranged in areas such as ‘Café’, ‘Relaxation Lounge’, ‘Business Lounge’ etc., where red carpet is stretched out between and around buildings. There are seats to relax on, fountains and even carpeted parked cars; at night the area is illuminated by artistic hanging lights.
