The Château de Tourbillon and an 11th Century church, the Notre-Dame-de-Valère, are built on a pair of steep hills rising along the river Rhône. The Château de Tourbillon dates from the 13th Century and was the summer residence of the bishops of Sion. It was destroyed by fire in 1788 and is now little more than a ruin. However, it is still worth climbing up to visit the remains and gain one of the best views in the region. From this vantage point high above the town of Sion, the Rhône valley, the town and Valère are breathtaking in their beauty.
