Among the many castles which, throughout the Middle Ages, were erected on banks of Lac Léman, that of Rolle is one of most mysterious, at least with regard to its origin and the history of its construction. As with the castle of Morges, it is very close to the water. Built in the form of a quadrilateral and flanked with a tower on each angle, it is curious in design. In 1799 the commune of Rolle bought the castle and it has since been used as a hospital, a prison, a school, a dungeon, municipal offices, a library and a military museum.
