One of the best viewpoints in Zürich is the top of the Charles Tower (Karlsturm). This is the southern of the two towers of the Grossmünster Church (see separate entry), which is one of Zürich’s landmarks. Emperor Charlemagne (c.747-c.814) is said to have founded the former monastery on this site and his statue stands on top of the south tower. There are 184 steps to climb from the nave up to the panorama platform, which offers superb views over the old town and lake.
