Cham, with a population of around 14,500, is located on the lake at the mouth of the River Lorze, approximately 5.5 km northwest of Zug. There is evidence of middle and late Bronze Age settlements in the town, which was first documented in 858, when King Louis the German, a grandson of Charlemagne, gave the town to his daughter, Hildegard. Attractions in Cham, which won the 1991 Wakker Prize for the preservation of its architectural heritage, include the marina, the 18th century St Jacobs Church, which has a 15th century late-Gothic tower, and Schloss St Andreas, with its 1488 chapel.
