The St Ursen Cathedral, with its 62 metre (203 feet) high tower and pale local marble, is Solothurn’s most prominent landmark. It was built in early classical style, in the period 1762-1773, initially by Gaetano Matteo Pisoni (1713-1782) and completed by his nephew Paolo Antonio Pisoni (1738-1804). Features include the eleven altars, eleven bells and eleven steps to each flight of the approach stairway (the number has a special significance in Solothurn). Note also the beautiful stucco works by Francesco Pozzi (1750-1805), the paintings by the Italian Domenico Corvi (1721-1803), the high altar in the form of a sarcophagus and the organ.
