In contrast to the historic buildings in St Gallen is the impressive Canton Emergency Call Centre, located just to the northeast of the Abbot’s Gate or Karlstor (see separate entry). An interesting example of modern architecture, it was built between 1996 and 1999 in the shape of an eye and with a moving roof. The centre was designed by the eminent architect, structural engineer and sculptor Santiago Calatrava (b.1951) whose main office is in nearby Zurich. Caltrava also designed St Gallen’s Palatinate Cellar and is known internationally for such projects as the Montjuic Communications Tower at the Olympic Ring Barcelona (1992).
