Founded by Hugo Ball, Emmy Hemmings and others in 1916, the Dada movement originated in the legendary Cabaret Voltaire. The movement expressed its anti-war sentiments by rejecting prevailing art and by staging and promoting anti-cultural works embracing all the visual arts, literature, poetry, theatre and graphic design. Dadaism spread all over the world and was at its peak from 1916-1920. Eventually Cabaret Voltaire fell into disrepair until 2002, when a group of neo-Dadaists led by Mark Divo occupied the building. After their eviction, it became a museum dedicated to Dada history, an exhibition space for modern Swiss art and stages other events.
