The Brunnewibli Sculpture on Linthesschergasse was unveiled in 1986 and immediately triggered a wave of outrage in the columns of newspapers and was denounced as a sexist provocation – not the only Zürich work of art to become a centre of controversy. It is the work of Peter Meister (1934-1999) and is the statue of a market woman minus her upper torso. Was it a co-incidence that it was totally demolished by a lorry in October 1987? A copy now stands in the identical place and as one wag commented ‘which goes to show you can’t keep a good woman down’.
