The eye-catching Broder Fountain (Broderbrunnen) is located at the junction of Oberer Graben and Sankt Leonhard-Strasse. It was erected in 1896 and commemorates the improvement in the water supply to St Gallen from Lake Constance in 1895. The figures of the fountain were the work of August Boesch, a sculptor from Toggenburg. They consisted of a plaster core electroplated with a thin layer of copper, which was cheaper than bronze and a common procedure at the time. They were, of necessity, replaced in 2000 and the originals are now in the citys history museum.
