The Briner and Kern Museum houses the collection of old masters, donated by Jakob Briner (1882-1967) to the City of Winterthur in 1967, and the collection of miniatures donated by Emil S. Kern in 1998. The Briner collection covers the period from the Renaissance to the 19th century and focuses on 17th century Dutch painting; it includes works by Jacob van Ruisdael and Willem van de Velde, amongst others. The Kern collection is of more than 500 portrait miniatures from the 16th to the 19th centuries, with emphasis on England, France, Austria and Switzerland. A feature is the strong characterization of facial expressions.
