Previously a private park and now owned by the University of Zürich, the Botanic Garden was opened in 1977. It covers about 53,000 square metres (about 13 acres), containing some 15,000 specimens and is laid out with minimal use of formal beds, utilising a single circular path. Most of the plants cultivated are wild and no effort is made to show the latest garden hybrids. The old Botanic garden in the centre of the city is still maintained as a public park, known as ‘Zur Katz’, it is also worth visiting particularly for its bamboos and old trees.
