The prize winning town of Bischofszell is located approximately 19 km northwest of St Gallen and is justly proud of its baroque architecture. A disastrous fire destroyed virtually the whole town in 1743 and the reconstruction created the opportunity to create a homogeneous town centre, of which the splendid town hall is a fine example. Built by the architect Gaspare Bagnato between 1747 and 1750, the three storied plastered building has gold, pink and white rococo decoration. Other notable features are the French hipped roof, the trefoil window, the first floor balcony and the main entrance accessed by a double winding staircase.
