The town of Bischofszell is about 19 km northwest of St Gallen and is well worth a visit. It was awarded the Swiss Conservation Society’s Wakker Prize in 1987, for preservation of the old town quarter including the castle and in 2005 the ‘Rose Town Prize. Attractions apart from the Town Hall (see separate entry) include the 14th/15th century late gothic parish church and treasury of St Pelagius and the 13th/14th century fortified town gate with its clock tower and onion dome. There is also the 13th-15th century former Bishop’s Palace and the local history museum which includes a fine porcelain collection.
