Located near Benken, approximately 19 km southeast of Rapperswil, is the pilgrimage church of Maria Bildstein. It has a most beautiful shrine which attracts both pilgrims and visitors to the Buchenwald von Benken and mass is held there both inside and outdoors. It was in 1519 that a servant of the Schänis Convent took a statue of the Virgin Mary into the Buchberg Mountains where the abbess had a wayside shrine built for it. The first chapel was built in 1830, but was soon replaced with a bigger one and grottoes have been added. The present church was built in 1965/6.
