Traces of a Neolithic settlement, the earliest evidence of human occupation of Zürich, were found on the small artificial island of Bauschänzli at the mouth of the Limmat River. In the 17th century it was used for the defence of the city and equipped with cannons. After the city walls were demolished, Bauschänzli became a public park and then a beer garden and now has a popular self-service restaurant. The Corelli circus visits there annually and there is an October Beer Fest. A good place to take refuge from the summer heat, eat and have a drink under the chestnut trees.
