The Battle Chapel (Schlachtkapelle), which commemorates the 1386 victory by the Old Swiss Confederacy over Duke Leopold III of Austria, is located 2 km northeast of Sempach, approximately 8.5 km southeast of Sursee. The victory was, according to 16th century legend, largely due to the Swiss hero Arnold von Winkelried, who threw himself on the enemy pikes to create an opening through which the Confederates could attack. The picturesque chapel was built in 1473 and restored in 1886; there is a modern monument to von Winkelried. The names and coats of arms of the knights who fell are painted on the chapel walls.
