The Basel Gate (Baseltor) is located at the point where the Baselstrasse enters the old town and is close to the St Ursen Cathedral (see separate entry). It is the eastern entry to the old city and is a powerful structure, the gate having strong fortifications on both sides. Construction was started by the master builder Hans Gibelin after the Schwabian War in 1504 and was eventually completed in 1535. The citys western gate, the Biel Gate, lies at the end of Gurzeingasse and features a well-known clock.
