The Bahnhofstrasse is the city’s foremost shopping street and, except for trams, is pedestrian-only as far as Paradeplatz. You will find elegant fashion outlets, department stores, boutiques such as Cartier, Bally and Gucci and a tourist favourite for chocolate lovers, Confisserie Sprüngli at No 21. A feature of interest is the monument to statesman and railway pioneer, Alfred Escher (1819-1882), which is outside the main station. The memorial to Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi (1746-1827), educationalist and protector of orphans, stands on green land on which a convicted criminal was executed in the 19th century and can never be sold.
