Located on Seefeldquai, close to Le Corbusier House (see separate entry), is the Bacchantenzug frieze, which caused a major scandal in Zürich in 1900. A German silk dealer, Gustav Henneberg, commissioned the sculptor Adolf Meyer to design a frieze to decorate his new villa, but when Meyer presented his initial sketches, Henneberg demanded more nudity! Meyer complied and sculpted a 20-metre Carrara marble frieze, depicting a procession of the followers of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry. When the villa was demolished in 1969, the frieze became the property of the council and was moved to its present location.
