The town of Baar, which incorporates the former hamlets of Allenwinden, Blickensdorf and Inwil, is located some 3 km northeast of Zug. Baar, first documented in 1045, has expanded rapidly since the 1960s and today has a population of around 22,000. The Höllgrotten Caves (see separate entry) are nearby and the town itself has a number of attractive features. The 14th century St Martin’s parish church was rebuilt in 1771 and has a huge Romanesque tower with a Baroque roof. The attractive Town Hall dates from 1676 and there is a late-Gothic chapel in the cemetery.
