Established in 1948, the Kunstmuseum is located in the former Grandhotel Thunerhof on the banks of the River Aare; its permanent exhibitions are devoted to Swiss and international artists, whilst the temporary exhibitions focus on modern art. Swiss artists of the 19th and 20th centuries represented include Ferdinand Hodler, Cuno Amiet, René Auberjonois, Paul Klee, Otto Morach, Johannes Itten, Alfred Glaus, Otto Nebel, Varlin and Meret Oppenheim. The museum’s collection, which consists of more than 5,000 works, is continuously being increased by works of contemporary Swiss artists such as Balthasar Burkhard, Claudia and Julia Müller Karim Noureldin, and Lutz and Guggisberg.
