The picturesque village of Ardez is located at an altitude of 1,467 metres in the Lower Engadin valley, some 9.5 km southwest of Scuol. First mentioned in 840, it is on the Inn River north bank and includes the hamlets of Bos-cha and Sur En. The village is overlooked by the tower and ruins of Steinsburg Castle, built in 1206; this is a heritage site including a church and prehistoric settlements. The village, since being destroyed by the Austrians in 1622, has remained undamaged and has many examples of houses decorated with sgraffiti (layers of different coloured plaster scratched on completion).
