The village of Amsoldingen is 644 metres above sea level and located approximately 6 km southwest of Thun, next to a lake of the same name. Originally a Roman settlement, it later became a secular foundation for canons and students. It is well known for its church, which was built around 933 and is the largest Ottonian Basilica in the region. The church, together with the refectory, sexton’s house and castle (which is privately owned), is a heritage site of national significance.
