The private art collection of Oscar Reinhart (1885-1965) is one of the most important of the 20th century; it comprises some 200 works of European art from the 14th to early 20th centuries. It is particularly strong in 19th century French Impressionists, which was Reinhart’s primary interest, with artists such as Renoir, Cézanne and Monet, but there are also works by older masters including Rubens, Goya and Bruegel. Only Post-Impressionists who were particularly indebted to Impressionism were purchased. The collection and his villa ‘Am Römerholz’ (see separate entry), were bequeathed to the Swiss Confederation. The museum and building are at present under reconstruction
