The ancient town of Altstätten is located at the foot of the Alpstein-Mountains, approximately 23 km southeast of St Gallen and close to the Austrian border. It has a population of around 11,000 and is at an altitude of 410 metres. Its attractions include the lovely 1794 parish church, the history museum in Gerbergasse (Tel +41 (0) 755 20 20) and the attractive houses in Marktgasse. The rack and pinion railway line to the ski resort of Gais starts from Altstätten. The pianist Paul Baumgartner (1903-1976) was born in the town; a noted teacher, his pupils included Alfred Brendel.
