Altreu is located approximately 8 km west of Solothurn on the River Aare and has the oldest and best known stork colony in Switzerland with around 200 wild storks. In 2007 it was named ‘Stork Village of Europe’ by Euro Nature. The resettlement project was started some 50 years ago, initially with storks from the Alsace and subsequently from Algeria, and in 2008 there were 23 pairs of breeding white storks. The ‘Witi’ is a nature conservation area of about 1,500 hectares where storks can forage for food. The visit can also be made by boat.
