Located at Altenrhein, adjacent to the airport and about 5 km northeast of Rorschach is the most eccentric Market Hall you are likely to see. It is the only Swiss, and last, project of the controversial Austrian painter, architect and sculptor Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000) who was born Friedrich Stowasser. It was completed in September 2001 and the architect was personally involved until his death in the three years of construction. Gilded onion spires, bright colours, odd windows, uneven floors, colourful ceramic columns and leafy roof surfaces, are all characteristic of Hundertwasser’s Gaudi-like style and his dislike of straight lines is apparent.
