The craftsmanship of the richly embellished old Simmental farmhouses is exemplified by the superb building housing the Agensteinhaus Museum. Visitors to the Erlenbach in Simmertal Church (see separate entry) should not miss the opportunity to see this original farmhouse, built in 1766, after the great village fire, by the 18th century master carpenter Hans Messerli. The ‘Museum der alten Landschaft Niedersimmental’ (Lower Simmental Valley Heritage Museum) documents the history, cattle breeding and handicrafts of the region and also stages temporary exhibitions. More of these buildings can be seen along the ‘Simmentaler Hausweg’, a themed hiking trail.
