The village of Aeschi bei Spiez, located at an altitude varying from 850 to 1,400 metres, is about 14 km southwest of Thun. First documented in 1228 as Assches, it has a population of around 2,000 and enjoys unparalleled views of Lake Thun and the surrounding mountains, including the Niesen at 2,362 metres. The present Protestant Church, a heritage site thought to date from 1488-1520, has frescos in the choir which were exposed in 1966. Other attractions include the Suldtal nature reserve, which has an 80 metre high waterfall, two ski lifts, 25 km of cross country skiing trails and many walking paths.
