Abbot’s Gate lies on the east side of the abbey area and is the last remaining outer gate in the city wall. Built in 1569/70, it is also known as Karlstor, after the counter-reformation leader Cardinal Charles Borromeo of Milan, allegedly the first person to ride through the gate. On the south elevation is the Renaissance coat of arms, above which is Christ on the cross and Mary and Joseph, with the papal coat of arms on the left and the double eagle imperial on the right. Lower down is the monastery’s coat of arms, which is in four parts.
