The Abbey Library is housed in a baroque hall, considered one of the world’s most beautiful library buildings. The abbey, founded in 613, copied and collected manuscripts from inception and, in spite of 14th and 16th century deprivations, now has more than 160,000 books. Of the collection, 2,100 are handwritten, half of these from the Middle Ages and over 400 are more than a thousand years old. It is Switzerland’s oldest library and one of the earliest and most important monastic libraries in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, the library also stages exhibitions, concerts and other events.
