The Abbey Lapidarium is a valuable collection of stone exhibits including sculptures; it is housed in a modern vaulted cellar under the west wing of the abbey complex and is one of the most important in Europe. The highlight is the display of archaeological finds relating to the Carolingian monastery built between 830 and 1837. The early medieval pieces, and in particular the striking capitals to the columns, are outstanding examples of Carolingian architectural sculpture. There is also a panel display ‘The Culture of the Abbey of St Gallen’.
