The St Gallen Abbey was for many centuries one of the most important Benedictine Abbeys in Europe and has been in existence since 719. The present Cathedral was built in late Baroque style between 1755 and 1767, by Austrian master builder Johann Michael Beer von Bildstein. In 1798 the abbey was secularized, the monks driven out, and the church became a Cathedral in 1846. The towers are 68 metres high and, inside, the choir area, with its 84 carved seats and historic or gan, is one of the highlights. The interior is opulently painted and decorated with stucco and carved woodwork.
