The Winkelried Monument is located in the town square of Stans, approximately 14 km south of Lucerne. It commemorates the mythical hero of the battle of Sempach in 1386, where the old Swiss Confederacy defeated the Austrians under Duke Leopold III. The Carrara marble monument stands in a niche and was erected in 1865; it is the work of Ferdinand Schlöth (1818-1891), one of the most important Swiss neo-classical sculptors. According to legend, Arnold von Winkelried saved the battle by throwing himself against the Austrians and absorbing the hostile spears, in order that the Swiss could advance against weaponless enemies.
