The William Tell Express trip (Lucerne-Flüelen-St Gotthard-Locarno-Lugano) enables visitors to enjoy some of Switzerland’s most attractive regions and emulates the original alpine express journey. There are two daily trips in each direction, but book in advance. From Lucerne you board a paddle steamer (in season) or a diesel motorboat and cruise to Flüelen on a trip of some 3.5 hours. Air-conditioned, first-class panorama cars of the Swiss Federal Railways take you on the famous Gotthard line, passing through the 15-kilometre-long Gotthard tunnel. The route is explained on the boat trip and a written description is provided for the rail journey.
